Analysis of organic contaminants in New Zealand marine mammals
نویسنده
چکیده
1. Chlorinated organic contaminants were analysed in samples of blubber collected from New Zealand's Hector's dolphin (Cephalorhynchus hectori ) and dusky dolphins (Lagenorhynchus obscurus ). 2. Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners were detected in all samples analysed. Total PCB concentrations measured in these samples were lower than those detected in cetaceans from other countries. 3. Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin (PCDD) and dibenzofuran (PCDF) congeners were also detected in many of the samples. These compounds were more common and present at higher concentrations in Hector's dolphins than in the dusky dolphin. 4. Data from this study will be used to perform pattern recognition analysis of the contaminants detected. Using these methods we hope to be able to better identify source areas for these contaminants. 5. It is difficult to predict adverse effects of contaminants on the dolphins at the level of the individual or population level. The fact that contaminant concentrations detected in New Zealand dolphins are consider ably lower than concentrations in northern hemisphere cetaceans suggests some margin of safety.

Heavy Metals and Trace Elements in Northwest Atlantic Harbor Seals In 2000, MERI launched Seals As Sentinels: Assessing the Impacts of Toxic Contaminants in Northwest Atlantic Seals
MERI began collaborating with the Northeast Region Marine Mammal Stranding Network in 2001 to respond to stranded marine mammals in the downeast and mid-coast Maine area and to collect tissues for contaminants research. Through this collaboration, MERI initially collected tissues from 34 stranded harbor seals (Phoca vitulina concolor) and 3 gray seals (Halichoerus gryphus), primarily pups and y...
متن کاملNontargeted Biomonitoring of Halogenated Organic Compounds in Two Ecotypes of Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) from the Southern California Bight
Targeted environmental monitoring reveals contamination by known chemicals, but may exclude potentially pervasive but unknown compounds. Marine mammals are sentinels of persistent and bioaccumulative contaminants due to their longevity and high trophic position. Using nontargeted analysis, we constructed a mass spectral library of 327 persistent and bioaccumulative compounds identified in blubb...
متن کاملReview Papers:Species diversity and distribution pattern of marine mammals of the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman - Iranian Waters
A total of 98 marine mammal records from Iranian coastal waters of the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman were compiled of which 66 are previously unpublished new records. Seventy-nine were from the Persian Gulf and 16 from the Gulf of Oman coast. The largest numbers of records were from Qeshm Island and Bushehr Provinces. Records of finless porpoise (Neophocaena phocaenoides), Indo-pacific humpba...
متن کاملContamination of an arctic terrestrial food web with marine-derived persistent organic pollutants transported by breeding seabirds.
At Cape Vera, Devon Island (Nunavut, Canada), a colony of northern fulmars (Fulmarus glacialis) concentrates and releases contaminants through their guano to the environment. We determined whether persistent organic pollutants (POPs) from seabirds were transferred to coastal food webs. Snow buntings (Plectrophenax nivalis) were the most contaminated species, with ∑PCB and ∑DDT (mean: 168, 106 n...
